B-67 STILL THE TEAM TO BEAT IN GREENLAND

The 2015 Greenland national championship took place during the first week of August in the north-central town of Qasigiannguit, and it was held there to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of host club Kugsak-45. Apart from the hosts, many of the country's biggest clubs were also in attendance, having qualified via regional tournaments.

Among them were reigning champions B-67, from the capital city, Nuuk, near-neighbours and bronze medallists from 2014 IT-79, and G-44 from Qeqertarsuaq. Ummannaq side FC Malamuk, T-41 (Aasiaat), K-33 (Qaqortoq) and SAK from Sisimiut also took part. SAK were drafted in on 30/07/15 to take the place of ATA Tasiilaq, who had won the Østgronland (East Greenland) regional championship but had to withdraw due to the club being unable to raise enough money to cover their travel costs.

Explaining the decision to award ATA's place to SAK, GBU chairman John Thorsen explained that it was unrealistic to expect another team from the east of the country to take ATA's place at such short notice. As more teams from central Greenland had entered the regional qualifiers than anywhere else, it was decided to award the vacant spot to SAK, who had finished third in qualifying. Thorsen admitted that it was not a universally popular decision, but emphasised that the GBU had to act quickly.

The tournament itself was won by B-67, who defeated IT-79 3:1 in a rather dour final, which only really livened up in the last half-hour or so. It was B-67's fourth win in a row, and their eleventh in total. IT-79 could console themselves with the fact that they had proved stubborn opponents throughout the tournament and were a team which had richly deserved their place in the final.

G-44 finished in third place, defeating hosts Kugsak-45 4:0 in front of a boisterous and colourful crowd. The scoreline was more than a little flattering as far as G-44 were concerned; Kugsak-45 played well enough, but were caught out by their opponents' counter-attacks, and their wastefulness from set-pieces was at times alarming.

Congratulations go to B-67, winners of the 2015 Greenland national championship, but IT-79 will be a team to watch in the coming years and will challenge their neighbours' supremacy. Please find below the results from said tournament.
