SANTOS WIN THEIR FIRST COPPA SERGIO VALCI, BUT MUSEI VATICANI STILL VATICAN'S TOP DOGS

Musei Vaticani won the Vatican City league championship earlier this year, and were hoping to top off the club's 50th anniversary in style by winning both the Coppa Sergio Valci and the Supercoppa, but Santos stopped them in their tracks, beating the league champions 2:0 in the cup final which took place at the end of May.

Musei Vaticani had topped the group stage of the competition, recovering from a surprise opening-day defeat by Fortitudo 2007/Pantheon by winning their remaining six matches, finishing three points clear of both Gendarmeria and Santos; all three clubs, together with fourth-placed Dirtel, qualified for the tournament's semi-final stage.

There were some interesting statistics for stats at the conclusion of the group stage for stats fans to ponder: for example, there wasn't a single drawn match during the entire cup competition. Guardia won three matches during the competition..and two of those were walkovers. Mpart from forfeiting two of their matches, Virtus 51, who finished bottom, conceded five or more goals in four of their seven matches, including nine in a last-day defeat to Fortitudo 2007/Pantheon.

Musei Vaticani dispatched Dirtel 2:1 in the semi-finals, while Santos reached the final by defeating Gendarmeria by the same score. Musei Vaticani were slight favourites to win the cup, but Santos turned that on its head by winning 3:0 to lift their first Coppa Sergio Valci, gaining revenge for their 3:2 loss to Musei Vaticani in last year's final.

Santos had defeated the museum side 1:0 in last year's Supercoppa and were looking to repeat the feat in this year's match, which took place on 6 June, but Musei Vaticani dished out their own revenge, winning the match by two goals to nil to win the trophy for the first time under the club's present name (they were formerly known as Società Sportiva Hermes). Musei Vaticani/SS Hermes won both the Supercoppa and Coppa Sergio Valci in 2008 and 2009.

Meanwhile, the 2016 Clericus Cup concluded with Mater Ecclesiae winning the competition by beating Pontificio Collegio Urbano 4:3 on penalties in the final (played on 28 May) after normal time ended scoreless. The tournament, which many regard as the Vatican's premier cup competition, does not come under ACDV jurisdiction and has nothing to do with football in the Holy See but is organised by the CSI (Centro Sportivo Italiano), an Italian voluntary organisation.
